I am a principal of an elementary school. Yesterday, I received a phone call from a parent of one of our Southeast Asian students. She wants to visit me to discuss some complaints from her son. She claims that some teachers often pat on his head or frequently hand out papers over his head, which makes him feel uncomfortable. Hmm... I’m not quite sure what is wrong.

Creating a class in Quizlet for my students

On the website Quizlet, I created my class for my students to share quizlets I made.

I can just show quizlets I made to students in my class but I think it would be more effective for students to study the sets of the quizlets by themselves using their own mobile phones.

So, I created my class on the website and made one quizlet with the words I learned from listening classes in TTP as an example. In the future, my students will be able to enter 'my class' on the website and share the quizlets to do self-study.

I found this article on TIME website and it was written in a very logical way.

Whenever Rob gave me arguments to write about, they were too unfamiliar for me to keep writing naturally. It means that I am not interested in controversial issues in the world and I do not have a critical thinking on them.

I need to build up my own opinion on international current issues.

Photo Peach - Memories in the U.S. in 2004

PhotoPeach is the website where I can create new slide shows.

In Theresa girls' high school, we, teachers show a slide show with all the 3rd graders' photos to their parents and guests every graduation ceremony. I think this website would also be useful for the slideshow.

For the exercise, I made one with the photos in the U.S..
I am missing the time when I was young and all the places I visited.

Camtasia Studio 8




Camtasia Studio is a very useful tool that can record every video clip if I want to record it. I sometimes felt uncomfortable that I couldn't download video clips on some websites for my classes not for the commercial purpose. But I can do that.

For the exercise, I captured one about Jamie Oliver. I'm a big fan of him.


+ It's Jamie Oliver's TED show and he got the TED prize. I like his idea, speaking style and appearance, of course : -)

For the lesson 5 (A New Challenge in a New Land)

The lesson5 is about foreigners who achieved their goals in Korea. So, before reading the maintext, I want to have a conversation about the opinions towards foreign workers in korea with my students. To motivate the students, I chose the Korean movie, 방가방가 which shows difficulties and discrimication that most Asian workers face in Korea. Then, I recorded the sound of the movie using Streomix and save it in Voki.

+ To record the sound of videoclips

1. Check whether your computer has the program 'streomix' - click the sound button with the right mouse button.

2. Click recording device (녹음장치)

3. Check that the steromix is w on your computer.

4. If then, open 'Audacity' - free software for recording and editing sounds.

5. Record sounds using Audacity and edit them.
  ( to select all the parts you recorded : Ctrl+a / to make sounds louder : Edit -> Amplify)

6. Upload the file to Voki.

Wordle with the article in the textbook


The article is from Lesson 5 in the textbook Theresa Girls' High School is using for the first graders(Chun Jae by Lee Chang Bong).
Can you guess what the writer is talking about?
Actually, I didn't read the article yet. As I guess, the writer tries to convey a message about the education differences in Korea and other countries. I would be right? :-)

The topic of the article is unfortunately about the foreigners who achieved their own goals or dreams in Korea. Students could not guess the topic correctly like I, but Wordle can make them interested in the article before studying it. I think it's a definitely good tool for English teachers.

+ When I put the Wordle on my blog with embed code, the image blurred. I dont' know why. So when wanting to use the image of Wordle, just copy the image with the 'Print Screen' button and use it after cropping it appropriately.

Even though I  recommended my students to use these cards in my class, I didn't explain about it a lot logically like Noel. I liked that  he explained the order to me one by one,asking trainees not to be busy on learning and memorizing words.

Reflection of the 1st session

  During CALL, I learned lots of new things and they were absolutely interesting and useful for me. I would like to keep using them when I go back my school.

 Quizlet, Wordle and Voki will be useful for my classes and I believe I will be able to give homework by Voice tread and Padlet in interesting ways.

Whenever I found out interesting and useful website, I saved them in Diigo. I think the website would be a treasure space for myself.

 The most useful thing for myself is Google document and Google Drive. Documents are saved automatically, and I can use the Google document as another board like Jeff in my classes.

 When I stay in Sacramento, I will probably use Google Hangout and have a conversation with my daughters watching their faces. To do that, maybe I have to explain about Google Hangout to my husband and mother-in-law in advance.

 As I made my own fun map about my travel route in the past, I could look through the street views where I lived before with my husband over 2 hours. That was really awesome.

Life's third act by Jane Fonda



It made me think of how I can be aging gracefully.


And here's an example of what I mean. This upward ascension can happen even in the face of extreme physical challenges. About three years ago, I read an article in the New York Times. It was about a man named Neil Selinger -- 57 years old, a retired lawyer -- who had joined the writers group at Sarah Lawrence where he found his writer's voice. Two years later, he was diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. It's a terrible disease. It's fatal. It wastes the body, but the mind remains intact. In this article, Mr. Selinger wrote the following to describe what was happening to him. And I quote, "As my muscles weakened, my writing became stronger. As I slowly lost my speech, I gained my voice. As I diminished, I grew. As I lost so much, I finally started to find myself." Neil Selinger, to me, is the embodiment of mounting the staircase in his third act.
Now while I was writing about this, I came upon a book called "Man's Search for Meaning"by Viktor Frankl. Viktor Frankl was a German psychiatrist who'd spent five years in a Nazi concentration camp. And he wrote that, while he was in the camp, he could tell, should they ever be released, which of the people would be okay and which would not. And he wrote this: "Everything you have in life can be taken from you except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation. This is what determines the quality of the life we've lived -- not whether we've been rich or poor, famous or unknown, healthy or suffering.What determines our quality of life is how we relate to these realities, what kind of meaning we assign them, what kind of attitude we cling to about them, what state of mind we allow them to trigger."
